It all started when Griet's father became blinded from a kiln explosion. Soon after Griet had to find work to help and support her family. She then found work as a maid in the house of the famous painter Johannes Vermeer. Even though Griet was a Protestant and the household was Catholic, she had to find a place in the chaotic home, all the way from Vermeer's jealous wife Catharina to one of his many children Cornelia.
