Reflections on Sallah (the Movie)

Summary: Discusses the film Sallah. Provides a plot summary, describing how the film portrays immigrants transitioning into the local community of Maabara. Examines how the film presents the values of families that journeyed through this transitional period and their attempts to adjust to the local way of life.
Sallah is a classic attempt to portray the life of the "Oriental" immigrants transitioning into the local community of Maabara. Centered around the life of a middle aged European Jew, and his family, it hopes to display the struggles and hardships that they had to over come - with wonderful use of humor and comedy. While addressing several stereotypes about the `Mizrahis' and `Ashkenazis', it also depicts several accounts that contradict these stereotypes and "misconceptions" about the two Jewish communities.

Staged in the mid-1960's the non-European Jews are shown to live a rather substandard life. On the contrary the European Jews, or Ashkanazis, seem to cherish their role as representatives of the British mandate. Even though the movie didn't focus a whole lot on their socio-economic status, one could inevitably rule the "Orientals" as being relatively uneducated and economically constrained.
