Becoming a Part of the Melting Pot

Summary: Describes how an ethnic Chinese family assimilated into American culture. Discusses differences in culture, religion, traditions and education.
My family members and I are the descendents of well-educated professors that taught in the palaces of Imperial China. I assume this is where we get our love for knowledge. Education has always been a significant factor in our family's judgment. To be educated is an honorable thing because most of my family has had experiences in which it is not always available.

The main traditions we share are all very ethnic and not common in the United States. For example we have a different religion all together. The majority of the United States is Christian or Catholic but our family shares the religion that is much more prominent in Asia. Buddhism is a religion in which we believe in karma. "What goes around comes around." All life is valued and killing another living being is considered a major vice.
