Shawshank Redemption is a movie that deals with the insitution of prison and its impact on people as well as its role as part of society. "These walls are funny. First you hate them, then you get used to them, enough time passes, you get so you depend on them. That's institutionalized." This paper demonstrates that Shawshank is an exampe of an institution because it is concerned with routine, forced conformity, power abuse, and the struggle to find hope within its lifeless walls, and how somehow, someway, Andy Defresne managed not to let Shawshank get the best of him, but for him, to get the best of Shawshank.
