"An Inspector Calls" by John Boynton Priestley is an imaginative play; it illustrates a development from ignorance to knowledge for not only the audience but the characters also. "An Inspector Calls" was written in 1945, but it is set in 1912, it shows that society at the time was split into social divisions through the Birling family. The wealth of the Birling family is contrasted with how poor Eva Smith was. Eva Smiths case was obviously not rare as the inspector says "there are a lot of young women living in that sort of existence in every city and big town in this country," so it shows many other women were in the same predicament that Eva was. As "An Inspector Calls" was set in 1945 but written in 1912, Mr Birling's comments about the Titanic being "absolutely unsinkable," and that there will be no war; only "peace and prosperity" show the...
