What Is a Hero?

Summary: Essay discusses the true definition of a hero or heroism as well as how it effects our society today.
What is hero/heroism? Heroes today are different than they were in the Anglo-Saxon era. For one thing, they had different codes of conduct than we do today. When I think of a hero I think of Superman saving the world, but there is more meaning to it than that. A hero consists of a good heart and love of the earth. The firefighters pulling a family from a burning building, a soldier saving his platoon from certain death, rescue workers pulling a stranded mountain climber from a precarious ledge, and the Knights of the Round Table saving a damsel in distress, are all examples of heroes. Many people display heroism in everyday life, but are rarely recognized, either by their friends, or by the media. Heroism can be traced back in time as early as when the dinosaurs were present.
