An important character in the film Billy Elliot directed by Stephen Daldry, is Billy Elliot (Jamie Bell), the main character. Set in 1984, County Durham, England, Billy Elliot is an important character because he shows us how life for an 11 year old boy with the dream of succeeding in ballet dancing, was difficult.

Coming from a family of miners, Billy has a simple life. But this starts to change when he is inspired by a ballet class. Billy is pressured into giving it a go by the ballet teacher, Mrs Wilkinson (Julie Walters), "Go on, I dare you." From then on, Billy uses his 50 pence for ballet lessons instead of boxing lessons. When Billy's father, (Gary Lewis), finds out that Billy is taking ballet lessons, he forbids Billy to continue.
