Guy and Mildred Montag live in a time and a place where entertainment is the most important part of people's lives. Their family life is falling apart, because technology takes priority in their life, there is nothing relevant to talk about, and do not actually love one another.

In this new fangled world in the future, there are many significant differences from today. For instance, cars drive so fast that the billboards have to be 200 feet just for the motorists to be able to see them. Another interesting invention is the Seashell radio, a small device shaped like a hearing aid that plays the radio in your ear. Mildred is so fascinated with this technology that she almost always has a seashell in her ear, and she has learned to read lips so she can understand what other people are saying.
