In France in 1894, when Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer of the French General Staff, was accused and convicted of espionage for Germany, no one expected that there would be either an "affair" or a heightened anti-Semitic attack upon the Jewish community. The verdict was lifelong deportation to Devil's Island as a result of controversial trial took place behind closed doors. The only evidence out of the whole big dossier of the prosecution was a so-called "bordereau" which was claimed to be a letter, said to be in Dreyfus's handwriting, addressed to the German military attaché, Schwartzkoppen. The debates on the accountability of trail, the appropriateness of the verdict and innocence or guilt of Alfred Dreyfus were on the top of agenda during 12 years, till The Court of Appeal's acquittal Dreyfus of all crimes.
