During Anna Howard Shaw's lifetime, women were treated as the inferior sex, and were denied most rights that women today take for granted. Anna Howard Shaw made valiant efforts in the women's suffrage movement, and her ministry promoted women's rights for thirty years.

Shaw was born in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England on February 14, 1847. She was born into poverty in a family of eight children and two parents that immigrated to Michigan in 1851.
