Summary: An exploration into the illegality of NATOs Intervention in Kosovo in 1999, with regard to various charters and conventions unheld by international law.
For seventy-nine days between the 24th of March and the 10th of June, 1999, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) conducted a campaign of air strikes over Kosovo, part of the Yugoslav Republic. The air strikes killed hundreds, in some estimates even thousands, of civilians over the seventy-nine day period. NATO's official line for its involvement in the region was to suppress the Genocide and violation of human rights of the Serbian people that was supposedly taking place within Kosovo. United Nations sponsored international missions to Kosovo since the end of the NATO campaign have determined that only around 2000 individuals were killed, and 30,000 internally displaced in Kosovo before the bombing began. These figures do not constitute Genocide as it is outlined in the Geneva Convention on the topic. The question of why NATO chose to intervene remains unclearly answered.
