Summary: About the book "When Women Played Hardball" by Susan E Johnson.
Susan E. Johnson's purpose for writing this book was to show the importance and significance in history the All-American Girls Baseball League had. In order to do this the women who played in the league needed to share their stories with the world. "Once the league folded, scarcely anyone--neither the media, management, the players, nor organized men's baseball--mentioned it again"(xv). Susan wanted to write a book about the league to show its value to so many people and explain how it was unable to survive. Susan was an avid fan of the women's baseball league growing up. When she reached fifty she decided to make her memories of watching the league play, as well as the memories of the athletes, into a book. Susan was able to have in depth interviews and include twenty-six women's stories into this book.
