Summary: Essay is based on the play by Eugene O'Neill called Anna Christie. The essay is about a girl from the sea who seeks personal redemption from her sordid past. Through the sea, her father, and her lover, Anna finally accepts her past of being a prostitute.
In Anna Christie, Anna's connection with the sea, her reconciliation with her father, and her love for Mat Burke result in self acceptance which leads to personal redemption. Anna Christie depicts a young woman searching for redemption from her dark past. Anna, coming from the land where she found destruction, eventually finds a cleansing in the sea. Although Anna is controlled on land, a silent longing has pulled her back to the sea and the redemption it offers. Anna's self acceptance lay in her discovery of the sea, and her rise to cleanness and hope. Anna's connection with the sea and the fog caused Anna to become reborn. For Anna, life on the coastal waters brings a sense of cleansing and rebirth. The sea purified Anna's soul, allowing her to accept her sordid past.
