What is it that makes some people special? It seems like no matter where they go they keep a high profile. John Steinbeck's Cannery Row is full of misled people. All misled people need guidance, and people look to leaders. People who lead by example, not choice. Doc a local biologist gives people hope in cannery Row.

The book is full of prostitutes, rejects, drunks and bums. Somehow they end up needing docs help, Such as the stories of Frankie and Joey. It goes to prove that even good people have their dark sides. It also means that bad things happen to innocent people. Doc is a hero to a lot of people but not everyone. Joey and Willard do not know Doc. They see him as a crazy scientist with babies in Jars. A spooky old man who is as mean as anyone...
