For almost as long as humans have lived, history has been depicted by artists. Daily life, customs, religious beliefs, and unfortunately, war have all inspired mankind to express itself artistically, even before he had written language. The cave paintings in France of hunted animals necessary for survival were painted by prehistoric man 17,000 years ago . It does not seem like it took a very long time for war to become a major theme in art. Chinese Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi's 6,000 life size terra cotta soldiers in battle formation protected him even in his grave 2,500 years ago . Roman and Greek statues glorify their warriors and battle scenes are depicted on pottery and on ancient architecture. Weapon of war became works of art. Shields, swords, and armor were made of precious metals and encrusted with jewels.
