Charles V
Charles V born in Ghent 1500 A.D. to Joanna of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon, and descendent of Holly Roman Emperor Maximilian I. Charles V was heir to a vast empire given to him in its entirety by 1516 including Aragon, Navarre, Granada, Naples, Sicily, Sardinia, Spanish Americas and a joint Kingship with his mother over Castile, of which he was regent.
Shortly after his accumulation of these lands he was crowned Holly Roman Emperor (1520). Now Charles had control of more lands and people than any man since Charlemagne, and in addition to his controlling of these lands Charles was charged with protecting the Holly Roman Empire. In direct opposition to Charles was his cousin by marriage Francis I of France, who also sought the title of Holly Roman Emperor but was bested by Charles V.
