Symbolism in the Lord of the Flies
In the novel The Lord of the Flies symbolism is a great factor in understanding the whole picture of the book. Symbolism is defined as being a sign, word, phrase, image, or other object that stands for or represents something. Almost all of the characters in this book were associated with something else through symbolism.
Piggy's symbolism played a big part in the development of the story. He and his glasses represented clear-sightedness and intelligence. He was portrayed as a very intelligent boy who seemed to have a good clue on what to do while stranded on the island. His only problem being his appearance that made the other children look down upon him and not respect his ideas as valid clues on survival.
