The Jungle

Summary: Essay provides a description of the novel "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair.
"The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair is a book with very discriptive information about life for most americans in the early 1900's. it is about a family that moves from lithuwania to america to try to have a better life. they have many trials and at times wish that they were back in lithuwania. they go through job after job because of all of the problems they are faced with. ona and jurgis get married and don't have enough money to pay for their wedding, they are about $100 in debt. ona is only 16 when they get married and soon after she gives birth to a little baby boy that they name after a reletive that dies. ona ends up getting a job being a prostitute but jurgis doesn't know, when he finds out one night when she is crying that her boss raped her he was extreamily upset and wanted revenge. he went to the boss and they got in a fight, jurgis bites off part of his cheek and is sent to jail. ona is pregnant again and has another little boy, but the baby is still born. jurgis goes and gets a house wife to try to help but she says that there is nothing that she can do and ona dies. jurgis leaves and becomes a bum. he goes back to chicago and says that he has never worked there before and gets a job making tunnels underground for telephone wires. one day when he is headed home he gets injured and is sent to the hospital and looses his job. he finds maria, an old friend from before he left, and she tells him that her son died one night when he got locked in at work. he had got drunk, fell asleep and was eaten by rats.
