On August 28, 1963, legendary Civil Rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. spoke these famous words as part of his "I have a dream" speech: "I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." More than 40 years have passed, and in colleges and businesses today, just the opposite is happening. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, affirmative action is defined as an active effort to improve the employment or educational opportunities of members of minority groups. After the Civil Rights movement in the 1960's, Affirmative Action may have been a useful tool in order to establish equality, but in 21st century America where we are trying to put the past behind us, Affirmative Action is an unfair, unnecessary advantage given to minorities.
