P:  And lo! there is a party of them who distort the Scripture with their tongues, that ye may think that what they say is from the Scripture, when it is not from the Scripture.  And they say:  It is from Allah, when it is not from Allah; and they speak a lie concerning Allah knowingly.

S:  Most surely there is a party amongst those who distort the Book with their tongue that you may consider it to be (a part) of the Book, and they say, It is from Allah, while it is not from Allah, and they tell a lie against Allah whilst they know.

003.079 Y:  It is not (possible) that a man, to whom is given the Book, and Wisdom, and the prophetic office, should say to people:  “Be ye my worshippers rather than Allah’s”:  on the contrary (He would say) “Be ye worshippers of Him Who is truly the Cherisher of all:  For ye have taught the Book and ye have studied it earnestly.”

P:  It is not (possible) for any human being unto whom Allah had given the Scripture and wisdom and the prophethood that he should afterwards have said unto mankind:  Be slaves of me instead of Allah; but (what he said was):  Be ye faithful servants of the Lord by virtue of your constant teaching of the Scripture and of your constant study thereof.

S:  It is not meet for a mortal that Allah should give him the Book and the wisdom and prophethood, then he should say to men:  Be my servants rather than Allah’s; but rather (he would say):  Be worshippers of the Lord because of your teaching the Book and your reading (it yourselves).

003.080 Y:  Nor would he instruct you to take angels and prophets for Lords and patrons.  What! would he bid you to unbelief after ye have bowed your will (To Allah in Islam)?

P:  And he commanded you not that ye should take the angels and the prophets for lords.  Would he command you to disbelieve after ye had surrendered (to Allah)?

S:  And neither would he enjoin you that you should take the angels and the prophets for lords; what! would he enjoin you with unbelief after you are Muslims?

003.081 Y:  Behold!  Allah took the covenant of the prophets, saying:  “I give you a Book and Wisdom; then comes to you a messenger, confirming what is with you; do ye believe in him and render him help.”  Allah said:  “Do ye agree, and take this my Covenant as binding on you?” They said:  “We agree.”  He said:  “Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses.”

P:  When Allah made (His) covenant with the prophets, (He said):  Behold that which I have given you of the Scripture and knowledge.  And afterward there will come unto you a messenger, confirming that which ye possess.  Ye shall believe in him and ye shall help him.  He said:  Do ye agree, and will ye take up My burden (which I lay upon you) in this (matter)?  They answered:  We agree.  He said:  Then bear ye witness.  I will be a witness with you.

S:  And when Allah made a covenant through the prophets:  Certainly what I have given you of Book and wisdom—­ then a messenger comes to you verifying that which is with you, you must believe in him, and you must aid him.  He said:  Do you affirm and accept My compact in this (matter)?  They said:  We do affirm.  He said:  Then bear witness, and I (too) am of the bearers of witness with you.
