Despite being a prolific author of novels, plays, short stories, and screenplays, Walter Greenwood is remembered almost exclusively for his first novel, Love on the Dole: A Tale of the Two Cities (1933), and for the stage and screen adaptations of this work. Love on the Dole, his only novel that continues to be readily available in a paperback edition, was one of the few of his works to achieve notable commercial success. Though Greenwood's name is mentioned in many standard studies of British literature and culture in the 1930s, such mention is almost invariably in conjunction with the popular and critical success of Love on the Dole. While there is no simple explanation for the critical neglect of most of Greenwood's work, it seems likely that Greenwood's reputation was to an extent the victim of critical typecasting.
