Dictionary of Literary Biography on Susan Petigru King

In 1993 Duke University Press republished two of Susan Petigru King's novels, Lily: A Novel (1855) and Gerald Gray's Wife (1864), in one volume, edited by the historians William and Jane Pease. This republication ended more than a century of complete neglect by the literary establishment of this South Carolina writer and is part of a recent resurgence of interest in popular American women writers of the nineteenth century. Unfortunately, with the exception of the introduction written by the Peases for this edition and a few short book reviews written shortly after the publication, little criticism exists of King's work. This lack of attention may in part result from a lack of material: King's other three novels and her final novella have been out of print for years. The oversight, however, may indicate that her novels and short stories do not fit the paradigms of "domestic fiction" outlined by such critics...
