Rózsa Péter was one of the early investigators in the field of recursive functions, a branch of mathematical logic. Recursive functions are those mathematical functions whose values can be established at every point, for whole numbers one and above. These functions are used to study the structure of number classes or functions in terms of the complexity of the calculations required to determine them, and have useful applications to computers and other automatic systems. Péter wrote two books and numerous papers on recursive functions, which are related to Alan Turing's theory of algorithms and machines and to Kurt Gödel's undecidability theorem of self-referential equations. Péter also wrote a popular treatment of mathematics, Playing with Infinity, which was translated into fourteen languages.
