Encyclopedia of World Biography on Harry Callahan

Considered to be one of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century, Harry Callahan (1912-1999) helped to bring photography into the mainstream of the art world. He was one of the few photographers who worked as well in color as he did in black and white.

Born in Detroit, Michigan on October 22, 1912, Harry Callahan grew up in the suburb of Royal Oak, where he graduated from the public schools. His parents were farmers who moved to Detroit in order to find work in the auto industry. Callahan attended Michigan State College in East Lansing for three semesters and studied engineering. He left school in 1933 and obtained a job as a shipping clerk with Chrysler Parts Corporation.
