Gary Keller, known as a fiction writer and poet under the pen name of El Huitlacoche, was born in San Diego, California, to Jack Keller and Estela Cárdenas Keller. He grew up on the United States-Mexican border as his father's different occupations required his family to travel between the two countries. From an early age Keller worked to support his family. Although his schooling was affected by the many moves, he was an avid reader and developed an early enthusiasm for literature. He supported himself teaching English in Mexico City while attending the Universidad de las Américas, where, in 1961, he obtained a B.A. in philosophy. A skillful Jai Alai player, Keller could have become a professional athlete, but he preferred to continue with his graduate studies in language and literature.
