Frances Power Cobbe, journalist, workhouse philanthropist, activist, and antivivisectionist, was among the best-known feminist thinkers of her day. The "oldest New Woman now living on the planet," as the Review of Reviews called her in 1894, she was a prominent participant in the reform movements to improve poor relief; a spokeswoman for Victorian women's educational and employment opportunities; an indefatigable defender of so-called redundant women; a witty and formidable critic of the marriage contract; and a passionate advocate of woman suffrage and right to bodily integrity.
