Women's Hotel Overview

In Daniel M. Lavery's novel Women's Hotel, an eclectic group of women live at the Biedermeier, a women's hotel in New York City. When the manager, Mrs. Mossler, can no longer afford to serve her residents breakfast, she panics that the Biedermeier will never be the same again. Over the course of the summer, she and the Biedermeier girls struggle to orient to changes at the hotel and in the city beyond. Set in the 1960s and written from the third person point of view, the novel explores themes including community, control, and loneliness.
