Vigil Overview

In Vigil, by George Saunders, Jill is an otherworldly who is tasked with comforting the dying. She is attending the final hours of oil magnate K.J. Boone, a man whose career helped shape the public debate on climate change. As visions of environmental devastation, past deceptions, and unresolved guilt surround his deathbed, Jill’s certainty about forgiveness, responsibility, and her own lost human life begins to fracture, forcing her to confront whether comfort is enough in the face of irreversible harm. It deals with themes of fate versus free will, guilt, and climate change.
