“Those Who Save Us” ties together the life experiences of Anna and her daughter Trudy. Anna had lived in Germany during World War II, where she became the mistress of an SS officer in an effort to protect her daughter. After the Germans are defeated by the United States, Anna marries an American soldier, Jack, and comes to the United States. Although she longs to leave her past behind her, she finds that the past cannot simply die with the war. Her daughter, Trudy, who bears little memory of their time in Germany, longs for connection with her mother, who remains silent in an effort to avoid the past. Seeking answers about her personal history, Trudy studies German History as a university professor.
