Pierre and Andrew Alexandre, twelveyear-old twins and runaway slaves, had earth-brown skin, pale gray eyes, and limp black curls. They had danced together to entertain their master's guests—until now.

Raised apart by Marquis Francois Jean Claude De Ville, they now lived together in the swamps around New Orleans in a perfect hiding place built by their father, Jacques.
