The Prophets: A Novel Overview

The Prophets (2021), by Robert Jones, Jr., is a historical novel set primarily on a Mississippi cotton plantation during the antebellum period. It encompasses a range of characters’ perspectives in telling the central, tragic love story of Samuel and Isaiah. A subplot follows the destruction of a precolonial African community, while a series of chapters giving voice to spirits or ancestors breaks up the third-person point of view and past-tense mode. Key themes include memory, survival, identity and loss (both personal and cultural), with the novel exploring the legacy of slavery, the spread of Christianity amongst slaves, the erosion of older beliefs, and the denial of queer love in the official records of history.
