Everything you need to understand or teach The Pond (Poem).
"The Pond" is a blank verse poem written by poet, novelist, translator, and academic Michael Schmidt. Originally published in a 1980 issue of Wiley Critical Quarterly, "The Pond" later appeared in Schmidt's 1983 collection Choosing a Guest: New and Selected Poems. In the poem, the speaker examines the intricate relationship between a local pond and the surrounding community (human and otherwise). As the pond changes over time, the speaker presents the risk of "drowning" in two different lights: one physical and the other spiritual.
