The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois Overview

Honoree Fanonne Jeffers’ novel, The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois, features two plotlines: the bildungsroman of Ailey Garfield, and the history of her ancestors’ experience in America from slavery up to her life in the twenty-first century. Both plots are primarily set in America’s South, mostly Georgia, but there are some portions of the Garfield’s plot that are set in “The City.” The novel’s thematic focus is on racism and feminism as experienced by Ailey and the women in her family. The novel culminates in Ailey recognizing that her experience of life is intertwined with the legacy of her ancestors.
