The Lotus-Eaters (Poem) Overview

“The Lotos-eaters” is a 173-line poem by Victorian poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The poem was first written in 1829 during a trip he took to northern Spain with his close friend, Arthur Hallam, although it was published several years later as part of Tennyson’s 1832 poetry collections. Like much of Tennyson’s other poetry, “The Lotos-eaters” draws from the classical and mythological stories of antiquity. Here, Tennyson expands upon an episode from Homer’s Odyssey, in which the hero’s crew lands upon the mysterious island of the titular lotos-eaters.
