The King at the Edge of the World Overview

The King at the Edge of the World is a historical fiction novel by Arthur Phillips. It is set in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Turkish doctor Mahmoud Ezzedine travels to England, where he is ensnared in a plot by a spy called Geoffrey Belloc to determine the religious beliefs of Scotland's King James IV, the presumed successor of Queen Elizabeth I. To discover the truth, Ezzedine and Belloc initiate a complex plan involving espionage, palace intrigue, and poison. The novel explores themes such as religion, culture, diplomacy, and history.
