The Fawn Overview

In Magda Szabó's novel The Fawn, the first person narrator Eszter struggles to reconcile herself with the truth of her fraught past. Although working as a successful actress in Budapest and involved with a charming lover, Eszter is perpetually haunted by insecurity, fear, and sorrow. Written in the direct address and defying formal conventions, the narrative conveys Eszter's attempts to own who she is both inside and outside the context of her affair. The novel explores themes including loss, identity, and the past.
