The Dying Animal Overview
David Kepesh, a white-haired professor of cultural studies at an unnamed New York university, becomes romantically entangled with one of his former students, 24-year-old Consuela Castillo. The libidinous Kepesh, who has dated several former students, soon finds himself tormented by jealousy and the realization that Consuela cannot be controlled or dismissed as easily as he imagined. The novel is a kind of confession, with frequent digressions on the nature of aging and desire, and leaps in time across the decades, from the 60s to the late 90s.
