The Dog of the North Overview

In Elizabeth McKenzie's novel The Dog of the North, first person narrator Penny Rush flees her life in Santa Cruz after discovering her husband Sherman's infidelity. She travels to Santa Barbara, hopeful that helping her grandparents will distract her from her personal troubles. However, the longer Penny is in Santa Barbara, the more her loneliness, depression, and anxiety threaten to consume her. The novel explores themes including grief, avoidance, and renewal.
