Everything you need to understand or teach The Coin by Yasmin Zaher.
In Yasmin Zaher's novel The Coin, an unnamed first person narrator leaves Palestine and moves to Brooklyn, New York. While living and teaching in the city, the narrator becomes convinced that a coin she swallowed as a child is lodged in her back. The discomfort of the coin and the city's filth become increasingly oppressive to her. However, the more she tries to eradicate the coin and filth, the less in control she feels. Tracing the narrator's work to reconcile with her trauma, the novel explores themes including identity, shame, and the past.
