In Agustina Bazterrica's novel Tender is the Flesh, after a virus infecting animals leaves the population without a source of meat, Marcos's society begins to breed and slaughter humans. Because of his background in the butchering industry and veterinary sciences, Marcos finds himself in a position of power at a local processing plant. Although disturbed by his vocation, Marcos feels incapable of leaving because of his familial and financial obligations. Then one day, when a client gifts Marcos a female specimen, Marcos is granted the opportunity to change. Bazterrica's dystopian and speculative novel tackles themes including humanity, violence, and grief.
