Summer House with Swimming Pool Overview

Summer House With Swimming Pool is a novel by Herman Koch. The story follows the competent but cynical doctor Marc Schlosser. Schlosser takes his family on vacation near the summer house of Ralph Meier—a famous actor and one of Schlosser's patients—in his attempt to have an affair with Ralph's wife, Judith. The vacation goes awry when, during one manic holiday night at the beach, Marc's 13-year-old daughter, Julia, is raped, with Ralph and Ralph's friend Stanley appearing to be plausible suspects. The novel explores the themes of the frailty, parenting, class, and morality.
