"Sugar Cane" is a Caribbean poem written by Guyanese poet Grace Nichols. Originally published in her collection I is a Long-Memoried Woman (Karnak House, 1983), "Sugar Cane" deals with the complex relationship between the sugar cane crop and different populations in Caribbean history. Using personification, a rhythmic and conversational tone, and natural imagery, Nichols comments on the history of enslavement in the region.
