Everything you need to understand or teach Sorrow Is Not My Name.
"Sorrow Is Not My Name" is a free verse praise poem by American poet, teacher, and gardener Ross Gay. Originally published in his 2011 collection Bringing the Shovel Down, "Sorrow Is Not My Name" presents the art of noticing as a balm to despair. The speaker staves off suicidal ideation by "[looking]" out into the world and cataloging everyday wonders (Lines 3, 6, and 20). In doing so, he incites a joy that is both ordinary and radical.
