Sonnet 37 (Lady Mary Wroth) Overview

Lady Mary Wroth was the second woman to author an extended sonnet sequence in English. "Sonnet 37" was included in Wroth's sonnet sequence Pamphilia to Amphilanthus, which itself appeared originally in her romance The Countess of Montgomery's Urania. The text was published in 1621, though the poems likely circulated among Wroth's friends and literary circle long before that. In the sequence, a woman named Pamphilia expresses her despair over her unfaithful lover.
