Small Pleasures Overview

In Clare Chambers' novel Small Pleasures, when Gretchen Tilbury writes into the North Kent Echo insisting her child is the result of a virgin birth, journalist Jean Swinney is eager to investigate. What begins as a professional relationship with Gretchen, her husband Howard, and her daughter Margaret, soon becomes complicated by Jean's confused attachment to each family member. Her envy of Gretchen, her love for Margaret, and her infatuation with Howard all threaten to complicate Jean's ability to solve the mystery of Gretchen's story. The novel explores themes including loneliness, longing, and love.
