School Trip Overview

In the graphic novel School Trip by Jerry Craft, students learn on a school trip to Paris that working out differences instead of ignoring them can make their school a better place for everyone. During the Paris trip, Ramon, who has been fodder for Andy’s bullying for years, finally stands up to Andy and tells him that he does not like Andy or the way Andy treats him. Ramon also tells the other kids that he wishes some of them would have stood up for him when Andy was being a bully. Since Maury is kind to Ramon during the trip, Ramon intercedes when some troublemakers begin tormenting Maury after they return to school, demonstrating what friendship is all about. Themes in the novel include racism, bullying, and following one’s dreams.
