Red Island House Overview

Red Island House, by Andrea Lee, is collection of short narratives set on the island of Madagascar. Taking place over several decades, the narratives explore different aspects of life on the island as experienced by the central character Shay. Since Shay is African-American and because Madagascar is geographically and culturally close to Africa, several of the book’s narratives consider themes of race and identity, as well as of the nature and power of stories and of female identity.
