People Like Us by Jason Mott tells the story of Soot and an unnamed narrator. Both are male and African American authors. Soot's chapters explore the aftermath of gun violence incidents in America, including tragedies that have impacted Soot personally. The unnamed narrator's chapters follow him and a selection of eccentric friends as they travel across Europe for the narrator's book tour. As they travel, the group considers whether Europe offers a better life for "people like us." The novel explores themes of violence, racism, and mental illness.
