Motherthing Overview

A domestic-drama-turned-supernatural-horror, Ainslie Hogarth's Motherthing is an off-kilter, hallucinatory account of a husband, Ralph, dealing with the suicide of his mother, and a wife, Abby, trying to hold the pieces together. The novel is told from Abby's first-person perspective as she tries to keep Ralph tethered to reality while she contends with her history with her own mother. Against a suburban backdrop, Hogarth tackles themes of emotional abuse, mental illness, and the baggage we all carry from the people who raised us.
