Miracles (Poem) Overview

“Miracles” is a 24-line lyric poem by American poet, essayist, and journalist Walt Whitman first published in 1856 in his famed collection, Leaves of Grass. Though the title of the poem carries with it a Judeo-Christian valence, the poem presents nontraditional notions of what miracles are and how they appear. Whitman finds miracles in the images of nature and everyday life, many of which are quotidian and secular.
